Meaning of the song
DRAFT INTERPRETATION · FOR CHRISTOPHER PICKEREL’S REVIEW · NOT YET APPROVED
Decadent Love places desire in a room already crowded with luxury: the Fairmont, aged wine, marble stairs and candlelight. Yet the narrator's attention leaves those possessions for one person. In this reading, ‘the finest thing’ expresses an overwhelming attraction while also revealing how the language of luxury shapes the narrator's gaze.
The encounter holds possibility without promising closeness. ‘Your eyes said “maybe,” then “nothing more”’ leaves the narrator between invitation and distance, while ‘Hold me till the foghorns sing’ asks for a moment to last rather than a future to be guaranteed. Desire remains the song's centre: the intensity of wanting someone does not mean they can be kept.
The fog gives that disappearance a physical form—beautiful, surrounding and impossible to hold. When the narrator asks it where the person went, it offers no answer, only more fog. The repeated ‘then you’re gone’ turns the glamour into an afterimage: a fleeting encounter that grows larger in memory precisely because it never becomes a lasting relationship.

Decadent Love, We’ll Be Back. After These Subliminal Messages., and Stay place desire, interruption and companionship next to one another. Stay’s kitchen scene offers a quiet centre: connection without a perfect answer.
Natural Drug Odyssey comes from Christopher Pick, a Northern California polymath. Guitarist first, synthhead after; the project moves across genres through the feeling each song needs to carry.
